Maps & Links Central

Cycle Touring Vancouver Island

This website is chock full of maps. This page bundles together links to 'overview maps' on the intro pages for the main riding areas/hubs, favourite rides and campgrounds. These intro pages and overview maps, in turn, have yet more detailed links to take you to specific ride pages, campground pages or Area pages, if you want. It's a great way to get some high level geographic views.

And, in case you might want to just toggle from Overview map to Overview map, I've added a summary map gallery - the same overview maps as in the thumbnails following, but without jumping off to the Intro pages, at the very bottom.

Maps & Links Central - Overview maps

Links here will jump to Overview maps on various Intro pages related to Areas, Fav Rides and Fav campgrounds. From these Intro pages, users will be able to jump out to detailed pages on specific areas or rides or campgrounds.

These are popular rides accessible to all riders, mostly on paved roads. Lots of Gulf Island rides, complete with that special vibe. The link goes to an overview map showing all rides, along with an alphabetical list of the rides below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

These are Fav backroads rides for those interested in getting into remote areas of Vancouver Island & the Sunshine Coast, off the usual beaten path. If you like rough and rugged wilderness, this is for you. The link goes to an overview map showing all rides, along with an alphabetical list of the rides below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

Here's some more rides that I just couldn't resist bringing forward for attention. There's a cross section of rides and areas here to check out. The link goes to an overview map showing all rides, along with an alphabetical list of the rides below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

A list of my favourite campgrounds. There's a wide variety, from full service popular spots to remote lakes you'll likely have all to yourself, with little or no facilities. The link goes to an overview map showing all camping spots, along with an alphabetical list of the camping spots below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

Seems there's too many camping spots I really like, so I've added in another list here of places you should consider checking out. Again, a whole range of options. The link goes to an overview map showing all the honourable mention camping spots, along with an alphabetical list of the camping spots below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

To help organize content, I've identified the major riding areas and hubs on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, as well as a few specialty areas. The link goes to an overview map showing all the Areas, along with an alphabetical list of the areas below, with links to the detailed pages for each.

From north of Campbell River up to the far north tip of Vancouver Island, this is an enormous and varied area, almost as big as the rest of the Island. The link goes to an overview map showing all area rides and camping spots, along with an alphabetical list of the rides and camping spots below, with links to the detailed pages for each.

Campbell River is the greatest single hub of nearby backroads, lakes and forestry camping spots. This hub extends much of the way south to Courtenay, which has its own fine catchment area for riding and camping. The link goes to an overview map showing all area rides and camping spots, along with an alphabetical list of the rides and camping spots below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

Port Alberni is another incredible riding hub, fine and varied riding and camping options in every direction, with a huge hinterland stretching all the way west to Tofino and the wild west coast. The link goes to an overview map showing all area rides and camping spots, along with an alphabetical list of the rides and camping spots below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

This is somewhat of an overlapping area that I'm drawing attention to because it's such a fine riding area along the eastern shores, with some of my favourite camping options. I keep heading back to this area. The link goes to an overview map showing area rides and camping spots, along with an alphabetical list of the rides and camping spots below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

Cowichan Lake is another incredible riding hub, with options around the lake and spinning off in all directions. That includes south all the way down to the fantastic SW coastline. The link goes to an overview map showing all area rides and camping spots, along with an alphabetical list of the rides and camping spots below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

Another special area, this one stretching from Malcolm and Comorant Islands far to the north, all the way to the southern Gulf Islands. Almost all the larger islands have excellent rides and camping spots, complete with that special Island vibe.  The link goes to an overview map showing all area rides and camping spots, along with an alphabetical list of the rides and camping spots below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

The Sunshine Coast is over on the BC mainland, strung up along the SW coast parallel to Vancouver Island. Not only does it share ferry links with Vancouver Island, but it is also set apart from the rest of the mainland by the fact it has no direct road connection (like Vancouver Island). The link goes to an overview map showing all area rides and camping spots, along with an alphabetical list of the rides and camping spots below, with links to the detailed pages (and maps) for each.

Another special area, a chance for me to give a little recognition to my new hometown. Courtenay may not have the most camping and riding options right next door, but within an easy few hours riding in all directions, you can get to so many brilliant riding locations, on Vancouver Island, a number of Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast. The link goes to an overview map showing all these nearby riding and camping options.
